The Moonwalkers is a multi-media showcase of the Apollo moon landings (1969-1972). It also looks forward to the resumption of manned flights to the moon in 2025 with the Artemis programme. In Greek mythology Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo.
I'm old enough to remember, as a BBC engineer, recording hours of inactivity from the moon with Patrick Moore asleep in my VT cubicle, his tie stained with egg yolk.
Also, on December 31, 1980, with not a great deal of affection, I recall being flown to New York for one night to record the Rose Bowl and carry the tapes safely back to earth. In those days it was a cheaper option than booking a satellite feed.
The Moonwalkers show, narrated by Tom Hanks, lasts an hour. You can stay and watch it twice, which I did. For those with hearing difficulties, it is subtitled in english throughout - very handy for following the interference-plagued speech of the astronauts.
The Moonwalkers is showing until April 21, 2024. Tickets start at £25 with concessions for under-18s and students.
Top Patrick Moore (1923-2012) trivia: He holds the longevity world record for presenting the same TV programme: The Sky at Night - 55 years. He once played Saint-Saens’ Swan on the piano accompanying Albert Einstein on violin.
More trivia: Your mobile phone has 100,000 times more computing power than Apollo 11’s computer.
