SPRING 2026 UPDATES

    Congratulations to our friend Doctor Carven Chin who completed the London Marathon, raising over £1000 for Crohn's & Colitis UK.

    Sadly, I wasn't there to cheer Carven on. However, after a Spoons breakfast at Cutty Sark, I did manage to see the elite athletes fly by at the 10k mark ....





     Until I downloaded my photos, I failed to spot double Paralympic 200m gold medallist Richard Whitehead (263).



Elite race winners Tigst Assefa (Ethiopia) and Sabastian Sawe (Kenya)

     Inspired by my encouragement at the 10k mark, Sabastian Sawe went on to become the first person to run a marathon in under two hours in a record-eligible race. His time of 1:59:30 was all the more remarkable as it was achieved in London which is not regarded as a fast course.
      In my youth, I was a decent distance runner, but I never ran a mile faster than four minutes 40 seconds - something the Kenyan achieved twenty-six times in a row.
     Sabastian had bread and honey for breakfast. Well, so did I - accompanied by sausages, porridge, fresh fruit and coffee at the Clock Gate near Cutty Sark. 

     V & A East opened in the Olympic Park on April 18. The first exhibitions are on black music and fashion. If they are not your bag (or handbag) it's still worth a visit for the ambience, café and views from the roof terrace. And you can combine it with V & A East Storehouse, ten minutes walk away through the park.

STATUES IN LONDON OF ENGLISH MONARCHS      By royal appointment, I hereby present my photos of London's public statues of Kings and Queens - together with some of their quirks and quotes.       I have fully listed all English  (latterly British) Kings and Queens  since the Norman Conquest , including those not deemed worthy of a statue. I've also included some earlier monarchs who do have statues . Unless otherwise stated, the statues are all in public places or places with free admission.      I have to confess that AI has been shamefully plundered  for my pen pictures ; but then many of our royals were shameful plunderers. GLASGOW STREET ART

   Glasgow Street Art        A few days after my Brighton break I found myself in another place awash with fine street art - and the only major UK city I'd never visited before . The 'summer' weather in Glasgow was even wetter and colder than in Brighton. But that didn't put me off; and I was never far from a Wetherspoons when the rain (and hail) showers threatened.      Using one of those quaint old paper street maps marked with a route plotted from streetartcities.com is a good way to get under the skin of a city, often away from the obvious tourist spots.       Where better to start than with archetypal Glaswegian  Rab C. Nesbitt, played by Gregor Fisher since 1988.
