    If you're heading into the Central London for lunch, shopping or a show, there are two free attractions worth adding to your itinerary...

    Five large sculptures by artist Mr D⊙⊙dle have been installed across London's West End. If you (and your kids) look closely, the detail within each figure is themed to reflect a different feature of the West End.

           I imagine Mr Doodle also designs his own clothes ....
     
    For the 2024 London Mural Festival, Mr Doodle (Sam Cox) created 58 doodle artworks across the Regent's Park Footbridge, Chalk Farm. Nearby London Zoo is well represented with a variety of animal pictures. It took a whole week for him to complete. If you think this is OTT, check out Mr Doodle's house. Mrs Doodle (Ukrainian artist and illustrator Alena Kaffa) was not available for comment. 

      In 2020, Mr Doodle was the world's fifth most successful artist under forty with $4.7 million in auction sales for his "graffiti spaghetti".

     Not everyone finds Mr Doodle's exuberant linework relaxing. For some people, densely packed, repetitive patterns can trigger headaches or even migraines. This may explain why one of our more unusual Airbnb guest requests was for plain, pattern-free bed linen.

Also worth visiting - Grosvenor Square
     Many of you will have memories of Grosvenor Square, perhaps from getting a US visa, or even protesting against the Vietnam War. But, in the last few years, it has changed dramatically. The US Embassy has moved to Nine Elms, a move initiated by George Bush (not Barack Obama, as claimed by Donald Trump) and the square has had a complete makeover. Whilst retaining some important memorials and the statues of three US presidents, the historic square has just re-opened after a £25 million transformation into a climate-resilient urban garden. Planting has been increased from less than one per cent of the square to close to half, with 70,000 new plants, 80,000 bulbs, 44 trees and two new wetlands introduced. Opening in the middle of a drought is the first challenge - they can't get ChatGPT to change the colour of the grass (like I just did). The dark clouds were real - but still no rain.

Sports Statues in London Wembley Stadium       This montage of  Rugby League greats from different teams and eras features (left to right)   Martin Offiah,  Eric Ashton,  Gus Risman,  Billy Boston and Alex Murphy.         Since 1929 the Rugby League Challenge Cup final has been held at Wembley  despite the fact the game isn't taken seriously anywhere  south of Widnes  (apart from  Australia and Perpignan). It's not for southern softies. And 90,000 northerners invading the capital is a tad  unnerving for L ondoners. LONDON STATUES - BRITISH PRIME MINISTERS         There have been fifty-eight British Prime Ministers and it is the nature of the beast that few of them leave office with enhanced reputations. So it is hardly surprising that not many have been honoured with public statues.  Wellington and Churchill are the obvious exceptions. But they  are remembered more for their leadership in times of conflict rather than political innovation. In fact both, from  aristocratic families, had little interest in reforms to benefit the hoi polloi.        So below, with a couple of exceptions, are all the public statues of British Prime Ministers I could find in locations freely accessible in London. Others exist in places where there is an admission charge, notably the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey.        Given my knowledge of British history is sketchy - not part of my 1960s O level syllabus - I got a bit carried away...
