      Great food and service, reasonable prices - the Prix Fixe is £24.50 for three courses.

Mercato, Mayfair
     Next door to the Mayfair Chippy is Mercato, a stunning food court in what was once a church .....
   
      I went for the nasi lemak, and was not disappointed. A similar meal may be a tenth the price at a Malaysian hawker stall; but you won't get the stained-glass windows. 
      With its proximity to Grosvenor Square, St Marks was once known as the 'American Church'. President Eisenhower and Eleanor Roosevelt are known to have worshipped there. But, with dwindling attendances, it was deconsecrated by the Church of England in 1974 and finally reborn as this popular sustainable community market.

ANIMAL STATUES IN LONDON 1

  Animal Statues in London 1          Denmark Hill                                                                    Sutton         T he Fox is in the front garden of the Fox on the Hill,  a very nice Wetherspoons with great views - you can see the London Eye in the distance.      The name of the pub dates back to the 1700s when   The Fox  was situated further down Denmark Hill. Later it was renamed   The Fox Under Hill  and the starting point for many hunting meets with foxhounds. It was flattened by the Luftwaffe in 1941 and later rebuilt at this new location as the present  Fox on the Hill.  It stands next to Ruskin Park on Denmark Hill, named after Prince George of Denmark, who hunted there. GLASGOW STREET ART

   Glasgow Street Art        A few days after my Brighton break I found myself in another place awash with fine street art - and the only major UK city I'd never visited before . The 'summer' weather in Glasgow was even wetter and colder than in Brighton. But that didn't put me off; and I was never far from a Wetherspoons when the rain (and hail) showers threatened.      Using one of those quaint old paper street maps marked with a route plotted from streetartcities.com is a good way to get under the skin of a city, often away from the obvious tourist spots.       Where better to start than with archetypal Glaswegian  Rab C. Nesbitt, played by Gregor Fisher since 1988.
