SEPTEMBER 2024 UPDATE

      I've added some more Zabou murals, and I'm also checking out the London Mural Festival for street artworks popping up in the capital throughout September. 

     And I have tidied up a few loose ends with an overnight stay in The Greenwood Inn, London's only Wetherspoons Hotel, and a visit to the newly-opened Wetherspoons at Waterloo Station .....

     The fifteen and latest artwork to appear on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square is by Teresa Margolles. Entitled Mil Veces un Instante (A Thousand Times in an Instant) it comprises plaster casts of the faces of 726 trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming Mexicans on a Mesoamerican Tzompantli (skull rack).

     At the risk of sounding like an uncompassionate old curmudgeon, I much prefer those earlier works like the gold rocking horse, blue cockerel and big thumb - which were simply pleasing on the eye.

ANIMAL STATUES IN LONDON 1

  Animal Statues in London 1          Denmark Hill                                                                    Sutton         T he Fox is in the front garden of the Fox on the Hill,  a very nice Wetherspoons with great views - you can see the London Eye in the distance.      The name of the pub dates back to the 1700s when   The Fox  was situated further down Denmark Hill. Later it was renamed   The Fox Under Hill  and the starting point for many hunting meets with foxhounds. GLASGOW STREET ART

   Glasgow Street Art        A few days after my Brighton break I found myself in another place awash with fine street art - and the only major UK city I'd never visited before . The 'summer' weather in Glasgow was even wetter and colder than in Brighton. But that didn't put me off; and I was never far from a Wetherspoons when the rain (and hail) showers threatened.      Using one of those quaint old paper street maps marked with a route plotted from streetartcities.com is a good way to get under the skin of a city, often away from the obvious tourist spots.       Where better to start than with archetypal Glaswegian  Rab C. Nesbitt, played by Gregor Fisher since 1988.
